内容简介:

As an important form of non-monetary incentives, workplace flexibility may help facilitate work-life balance to improve work motivation and productivity, but on the other hand may reduce chance of promotion and require longer and irregular worktime. Using experimentally collected data combined with naturally occurring data fromChina’s online job market, the present study investigates the impacts of various flexible work practices on job seekers’ job entry decisions and valuation of workplace flexibility. We find that granting timing flexibility or place flexibility alone has no significant effect on job application decisions, whereas granting both timing and place flexibility significantly increases selection into the job compared to when granting timing flexibility only. Job seekers in general value workplace flexibility so that they are willing to accept lower monthly salary after our intervention with flexible conditions.

题目:How Do Households Adjust to Trade Liberalization? Evidence from China’s WTO Accession

American Economic Review, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of International Economics等知名经济学期刊。

内容简介:
We investigate the impacts of tariff  reduction after the entry into WTO on local labor market outcomes and household  behaviors in urban China. Regions that initially specialized in industries  facing larger tariff cuts experienced slower wage growth relative to other  regions. Meanwhile, households responded to this negative wage shock  correspondingly. First, female and older household members worked more,  especially at the non-tradable sector. Second, household size increased because  more young adults co-resided with their parents. Third, households saved less.  These behaviors significantly buffer the negative wage shock induced by trade  liberalization. As a result, the effect of trade liberalization on consumption  is much weaker than its effect on wages.
