This paper examines how transportation infrastructure affects spatial marriage dynamics with China. Using population census and household survey, we find that a 10 percent increase in high-speed rail (HRS) service intensity raises marriage rates by 0.13 percent in second-tier cities but reduces them by 0.07 percent in third-tier cities, with weaker effects in first-tier cities. Mechanism analyses show that HSR expansion reshapes marriage-related migration, facilitates population movement from first-tier to second-tier cities, improves labor-market opportunities, and lowers fresh food prices in second-tier cities, while weakening firm investment in third-tier cities. Heterogeneity analyses show that marriage effects are concentrated among young adults aged 20–40, with gains for men in second-tier cities and declines for both men and women in third-tier cities. These findings highlight the role of HSR in reshaping spatial population dynamics and marriage behavior.
