When war ends, peace awakens a desire to have children. Population recovery depends critically on how postwar institutions are reconstructed. Applying a staggered difference-in-differences approach, this study examines the impact of peace on population recovery using a natural experiment in China in the first half of the 20th century. We find that population recovery in counties that experienced regime change was about 3.7% higher than in those that did not. Two mechanisms are discussed: (i) institutional reform, including land reform, women's emancipation, and literacy movements, and (ii) prior political control. This paper provides a new perspective on the link between peace and population recovery from the perspective of revolutionary institutional change.
